Foodie Friday

Welcome to Foodie Friday. Please visit our hostess, Michael, at Designs By Gollum for lots of delish food.

Our family just returned from a spring break trip to the Cincinnati area to visit family. Whenever we get back that way, we love to hit up our favorite restaurants.

Our first stop was Skyline Chili.

Mr. Maison and I each got a four-way: chili, spaghetti, onions and cheese.

Mr. Maison also got a cheese coney on the side.

They even have a vegetarian version that has black beans and rice in place of the ground beef. Since my son is vegan, this is what he always gets.

Another of our local favs is White Castle. Yum...a little piece of heaven in a box!

My parents usually bring us cans of chili to satisfy our cravings in between visits and we make our own four-ways and coneys. My mom has had this old recipe for years for Cincinnati-style chili. I've never made it, but I'm thinking of making it with soy crumbles for my son.
Cincinnati-style Chili
2 pounds ground beef
4 medium onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 small can tomato paste
4 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon allspice
1 quart water
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 medium hot peppers (put in whole)
salt & pepper
Cook for five hours. Add a little water as needed while cooking. Remove peppers after chili is done.

The ground beef in this chili is really fine and most recipes tell you not to brown it first; simply cook it in the water.

  1. I want skyline now. Right now. Not later...NOW! We use to live on the border of Ohio in Ky. We use to eat those little coney chili dogs all the time. I know what we are having for dinner tomorrow or maybe for breakfast:)

  5. My son and his friends would love this. Unfortunately...we don't have either Skyline or White Castle.
I bet using your recipe I could come close to restaurant quality.
Come by for a visit. It's always enjoyable meeting new friends!

    Sweet Wishes,

  6. Hi Tammy! I'm Tammy too! LOL I made a similar recipe for Skyline Chili last October for my Halloween party chili bar. I found my recipe on-line somewhere, wish I'd had your mom's. I'll bet it is closer to the authentic recipe the restaraunt uses. It is yummy! And, I did boil the beef in water. Kinda weird, but, it does make a very fine textured beef. Everyone should try Tammy's recipe. You'll love it!
